Spinal decompression therapy uses a computerized decompression table to alternately apply traction pressure and relaxation to the spine. Our chiropractor, Dr.David Witte, carefully spinal decompressioncalibrates the machine so that it will apply exactly the right amount of pressure to the spine and target the spinal injury. This unique mechanical manipulation creates a vacuum-like effect that encourages bulging and herniated discs to return to their proper placement.

In addition, this vacuum effect, known as negative intradiscal pressure, encourages blood flow and fluids to return to the region surrounding the injured disc. Over time, this promotes healing and can even regenerate the disc tissue. The use of decompression therapy has proven to be very helpful for patients with chronic back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, and headache. It is especially useful for patients suffering from herniated disc or disc damage caused by auto accident injuries or personal injuries. Dr. Witte also uses this therapy to treat sciatica.

Spinal decompression therapy is a form of mechanical traction that is used to cure back pain, headache pain, disc damage, and herniated discs. Dr. Allen Dyer, Ph.D./M.D., invented non-surgical decompression in 1985. During the early 1990s non-surgical decompression was introduced to the medical community as an alternative to back surgery for healing herniated discs and other serious spinal problems. Since that time, decompression therapy has become widely tested and adopted throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. Numerous studies have shown that decompression therapy helps patients recover from serious spinal injuries more quickly and that it has a curative affect on discs and improves discal function.

What to Expect During Spinal Decompression Treatment

During decompression therapy you will lie comfortably on the decompression table, and we will use straps to secure your torso and extremities. Dr. Witte will then calibrate the machine to apply localized stretching and pressure to your spinal injury. Sometimes the therapy is mildly uncomfortable, but many patients find it relaxing enough to fall asleep during the treatment.

Each decompression session will last approximately 15 minutes. During that time, the machine will alternate between the application of pressure and relaxation. After the treatment, it is important to drink water and get plenty of rest. Decompression therapy usually requires a series of sessions extending over several months to achieve lasting benefits.

When decompression therapy is combined with additional chiropractic therapies the relief from headache, neck pain, back pain, and shoulder pain is even more dramatic. Our chiropractor focuses on whole body health and wellness and his years of experience have convinced him that using a combination of therapies is the most successful method for treating spinal injuries.

By combining your decompression treatment with corrective exercises, acupuncture, Low Level Laser therapy, or manipulation, your injury will heal more quickly. In addition, by using chiropractic care in conjunction with lifestyle counseling, you will find that your entire body and mind feels better and are rejuvenated.
